Presentations by the Tweeting the War research team
Dr Maria Fragoulaki (Senior Lecturer in Ancient Greek History, Cardiff University, PI) presents the project and explains why the ancient wars narrated by the Greek historians Herodotus and Thucydides (fifth-century BCE) speak to modern conflicts.
Dr Tereza Spilioti (Reader in Language and Communication, Cardiff University, Co-I) explains the methods of digital discourse analysis used to collect and analyse a dataset of tweets where modern iterations of Herodotus and Thucydides appear in the context of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
Dr Aurora Goodwin (expert in Language and Communication, Cardiff University, Postdoctoral Research Assistant) tackles questions of social media users: Who is tweeting the war using ancient texts? What we can or cannot know about individuals and groups engaging with Herodotus and Thucydides on social media?
Ludovico Runco (PhD student in Ancient History, Cardiff University, Doctoral Research Assistant) explores the transformations of the ancient historical texts in the environment of the social media posts on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
